Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders as a Qualifying Condition
Seizure disorders, including all forms of epilepsy, qualify for the NJ Medical Marijuana Program. This category has the strongest direct scientific evidence of any indication for cannabis therapy, culminating in FDA approval of Epidiolex (pharmaceutical-grade CBD) for specific epilepsy syndromes.
For patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy — those who have failed two or more anti-seizure medications without adequate seizure control — medical cannabis, particularly high-CBD preparations, represents one of the most evidence-supported options available.
Evidence Base
CBD-dominant cannabis preparations have demonstrated significant seizure reduction in multiple randomized controlled trials, with the strongest evidence in Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Observational studies suggest benefit across a broader range of epilepsy types. THC-containing preparations are used more cautiously in epilepsy and require close physician oversight.
What to Expect
Your evaluation will include a thorough review of your seizure history, prior medications tried, and any relevant neurological workup. Our providers coordinate with neurology when appropriate and are experienced in navigating the complex considerations specific to epilepsy patients. We also provide guidance on interactions between cannabis and anti-seizure medications.
