Glaucoma as a Qualifying Condition
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) that can damage the optic nerve and lead to irreversible vision loss. It is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide and is most common in adults over 60.
Cannabis was one of the earliest studied potential treatments for glaucoma — research dating to the 1970s demonstrated that THC can lower intraocular pressure. While ophthalmologists typically prioritize proven eye drops and surgery, medical cannabis is recognized as an adjunct option for patients who have not achieved adequate IOP control or who experience significant side effects from standard treatments.
Cannabis and Intraocular Pressure
THC has demonstrated IOP-lowering effects in multiple studies, reducing pressure by 25–30% for approximately 3–4 hours per dose. The relatively short duration of effect means that consistent IOP control requires frequent dosing, which should be considered alongside your existing glaucoma management plan.
Your provider at PremierMD will coordinate with your ophthalmologist and will only recommend cannabis therapy if it complements your overall glaucoma management strategy. We do not recommend cannabis as a sole treatment for glaucoma.
