HIV/AIDS as a Qualifying Condition
HIV/AIDS has been recognized as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis since the earliest days of state medical marijuana programs, reflecting both a strong body of clinical evidence and recognition of the substantial symptom burden many HIV-positive patients carry.
Modern antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition for many patients. However, HIV and its treatment continue to cause significant symptoms including neuropathic pain, nausea, appetite suppression, fatigue, and mental health challenges that can substantially reduce quality of life.
How Cannabis May Help
- HIV-associated neuropathic pain: One of the best-supported indications, with multiple clinical trials demonstrating cannabis superiority over placebo for peripheral neuropathy pain
- Wasting syndrome: Cannabis stimulates appetite and has been shown to help patients maintain weight
- Antiretroviral side effects: Nausea, vomiting, and appetite loss from ARV regimens may respond to cannabis therapy
- Sleep and mood: Cannabis can improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety in HIV-positive patients
Important Drug Interaction Note
Cannabis can interact with some antiretroviral medications, particularly those metabolized by the CYP450 enzyme system. Your PremierMD provider will review your full medication list and coordinate with your HIV specialist if needed to ensure cannabis therapy is safe within your specific regimen.
