Migraine as a Qualifying Condition
Migraines affect over 12% of the population and represent one of the most disabling neurological conditions. For the millions who live with chronic or episodic migraines that interfere with daily life, the NJ Medical Marijuana Program offers a legitimate treatment option when standard therapies have failed or caused unacceptable side effects.
PremierMD evaluates patients with both episodic migraine (less than 15 headache days per month) and chronic migraine (15 or more headache days per month) who have not achieved adequate relief with conventional preventive and abortive treatments.
How Cannabis May Help
Growing evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in migraine pathophysiology. Cannabis has demonstrated effectiveness in multiple clinical contexts:
- Preventive use: Regular cannabis use is associated with reduced migraine frequency in several observational studies
- Acute abortive use: Cannabis has been used successfully to abort migraine attacks, particularly in patients with nausea who cannot tolerate oral medications
- Associated symptoms: Nausea, light sensitivity, and sleep disruption related to migraines may also respond to cannabis therapy
Important Considerations
Cannabis use can occasionally trigger headaches in some patients, particularly with certain products or delivery methods. Your provider will work with you to identify products and dosing approaches that minimize this risk. Product selection for migraine patients requires careful guidance — this is why physician evaluation matters.
