Muscular Dystrophy as a Qualifying Condition
Muscular dystrophy (MD) refers to a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Common types include Duchenne, Becker, myotonic, limb-girdle, and facioscapulohumeral MD. All forms of muscular dystrophy are qualifying conditions under the NJ Medical Marijuana Program.
While cannabis does not alter the underlying genetic cause of muscular dystrophy, it can provide meaningful relief from several symptoms that significantly impact quality of life as the disease progresses.
Symptoms Cannabis May Help
- Muscle spasticity and contractures
- Chronic pain, particularly in more advanced disease
- Sleep disruption
- Anxiety and mood disturbance related to progressive illness
- Appetite and weight management
Our Approach
Patients with muscular dystrophy often have complex medical histories and may be on multiple medications. Our providers carefully review drug interactions, respiratory considerations (important in later-stage MD), and individual symptom priorities to develop a personalized recommendation. We also coordinate with your neuromuscular specialist and work with the patient's care team holistically.
