Terminal Illness as a Qualifying Condition
New Jersey recognizes terminal illness — generally defined as a life expectancy of one year or less — as a qualifying condition for the medical cannabis program, with provisions for expedited processing. Patients facing a terminal diagnosis deserve access to every available tool for managing pain, nausea, anxiety, and other symptoms. PremierMD prioritizes scheduling for terminal illness patients and makes the process as simple and low-burden as possible.
How Cannabis Can Help
In palliative and end-of-life care, medical cannabis can address multiple distressing symptoms simultaneously:
- Pain — including pain refractory to opioids
- Nausea and vomiting from disease or treatment
- Appetite loss and cachexia
- Anxiety and existential distress
- Sleep disruption
- Breathlessness (some evidence)
For many patients and families, medical cannabis also provides a sense of agency and choice during a period when so much feels outside their control.
How We Can Help
PremierMD will schedule your evaluation as quickly as possible — typically within days, not weeks. We offer telehealth appointments for patients who cannot travel. We coordinate with your palliative care team, hospice provider, and oncologist when relevant. Priya Sharma, NP — who comes from a palliative care background — is particularly experienced in caring for patients at this stage of life.
If you are a family member or caregiver helping a loved one access care, please call us directly at (908) 450-7002 and explain the situation. We will help you navigate the process.
